Report: Facebook And Yahoo Discussing Search Partnership

by Brad MerrillNovember 18, 2012

20121118-174215.jpgYahoo CEO Marissa Mayer and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg are discussing a potential potential partnership, according to a report in The Sunday Telegraph.

The news comes from anonymous sources, who are primarily “Yahoo insiders.” It’s very vague as far as details go, maybe because details are still being worked out, but “board members expect the talks to lead to much more substantial collaboration based around web-based search.”

Assuming this is true, what significance would the deal have? The Telegraph suggests that it could “reorder the hierarchy of the world’s biggest technology companies,” giving Yahoo a big selling point in its efforts to win over web searchers and engineers, and making Facebook more useful for its members.

This deal could help Facebook to finally enter the search market. However, it could just be wishful thinking on Yahoo’s part, as Facebook’s partnership with Microsoft doesn’t seem to have brought any major lift to Bing.

I’ve reached out to both companies for a comment, and will update if I hear anything.
