Quick Tip: Use Your Smartphone As A Remote For YouTube On Your Computer

by Brad MerrillNovember 15, 2014

If you use a Mac or PC as a set-top box, or if you just like watching YouTube videos on your computer from a distance where you may not have the mouse and keyboard right in front of you (on a couch or in your bed, for example), you’re going to love this trick.

You can control YouTube from any smartphone without installing any apps or linking the two over a network. Here’s how:

  1. Go to http://www.youtube.com/tv on your computer.
  2. Press the up arrow on your keyboard twice to get to the search tab. Then press Enter, and it will give you a code to enter on your mobile device.
  3. Go to http://www.youtube.com/pair on your smartphone and enter the code.

That’s it! Now you can control YouTube from your smartphone.

The experience is just like streaming to Google’s Chromecast. Just tap the Cast icon on any video, and select “YouTube TV” as the destination.
